Research
Our clinic untertakes reserch in the fields of Preventive Dentistry, Oral Epidemiology, Periodontolgy, Cariology and Endodontology.
The main reserch interests are as follows:
Research in Preventive Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology
Contact persons:
Prof. Dr. T. Imfeld
Dr. Giorgio Menghini

- Chemical plaque control
- Epidemiological studies on oral hygiene
- Fluoride monitoring
Oral Epidemiology:
- Performance of long-term epidemiological studies to supervice the oral helth of the population. The he high quality of the used parameters as well as the sophisticated evaluation methods lead to a comparability of the datas of the last 40 years. This know-how starts with the knowledge on IT based on the experience in evaluating and analysing the different datas, starting from radiological datas up to the quality assurance mechanism. Caries-epidemiolocial datas are regularily evaluated in the Kanton of Zurich in toddlers (2 years), small children (5 years), school children (7 to 16 years), recruts (20 years) and adults. Therefore it is particularily in school children possible to estimate the amount of carious lesions in school children over the last 40 years. Additional treatment methods can then be introduced to reduce the amount of carious lesions.
- Parallell to the carious evaluations, datas on food (e.g. fluorid in salt, sof-drink habits) or oral hygiene habits (tooth paste, gels, rinsing liquids, amount of tooth-brushing per day) are evaluated.
- Supervision of fluoride intake in different age groups.
Preventive dentistry:
The advisory service in preventive dentistry is based on the scientific datas of the unit of oral epidemiology and preventive dentistry. This includes:
- To advice the swiss governement on a local or kantonal level with teaching prevention for children, school children, adolescents and adults. The prevention in schools is thereby one of the most important mechanism to change oral hygiene behaviours for the steadily changing needs.
- To advice (information, recomendations, continuing education) for all persons which are affiliated with oral hygiene behaviour (mothers, pediatrics, teachers, dental hygienists and dentists)
- To coordinate interventions and projects to maintain the oral hygiene of the population.
